Being a Servant; A step Toward Humility

Lately the Lord has been stirring me in the understanding of being humble. I asked Alex about his understanding of how to humble yourself, and he answered "become a servant."

The following are scriptures I came across regarding the aforementioned topic(s). It's truth, wisdom, instruction and encouragement to those who can hear.

DEUTERONOMY 8

2 And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to HUMBLE thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.

16 Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might HUMBLE thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end.

2 CHRONICLES 7

14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall HUMBLE themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

2 CHRONICLES 34

27 Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst HUMBLE thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the LORD.

JOB 22

29 When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the HUMBLE person.

PSALM 9

12 When he maketh inquisition for blood, he remembereth them: he forgetteth not the cry of the HUMBLE.

PROVERBS 16

19 Better it is to be of an HUMBLE spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.

MATTHEW 18

4 Whosoever therefore shall HUMBLE himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

MATTHEW 23

12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall HUMBLE himself shall be exalted.

PROVERBS 29

23 A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the HUMBLE in spirit.

JAMES 4

6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the HUMBLE.

10 HUMBLE yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

1 PETER 5

5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the HUMBLE.

6 HUMBLE yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time

MATTHEW 10

24 The disciple is not above his master, nor the SERVANT above his lord.

25 It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the SERVANT as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?

MATTHEW 20

27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your SERVANT:

MATTHEW 25

21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful SERVANT: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

LUKE 12

43 Blessed is that SERVANT, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.

45 But and if that SERVANT say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;

46 The lord of that SERVANT will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.

47 And that SERVANT, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.

JOHN 12

26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my SERVANT be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

1 CORINTHIANS 7

21 Art thou called being a SERVANT? care not for it: but if thou mayest be made free, use it rather.

22 For he that is called in the Lord, being a SERVANT, is the Lord's freeman: likewise also he that is called, being free, is Christ's SERVANT.

1 CORINTHIANS 9

19 For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself SERVANT unto all, that I might gain the more.

GALATIANS 1

10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the SERVANT of Christ.

2 TIMOTHY 2

24 And the SERVANT of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient.

Praise God.

I'm glad you came across these scriptures, humility is a fantastic thing, and I definetly have to eat my own words about being a servant. It's strange sometimes how we don't grasp the magnitude of an idea, such as this one. We say we serve God, and we may, but are we servants of men? Not because they have rule over us, but because we are to be as Jesus, who came as a servant. And to those who do have rule over us (our bosses, policeman, etc.) we are to humbly respect and be obediant to them as we would Christ. Even if we are the greatest we are to be as the least, so that in our posistion we would not become prideful. Knowing that the greatest still resides under a greater God, and is himself still, in all reality, a servant.

I thank God for stirring you in this way, Jenn.

The sum of the whole duty of man is to love God with all your heart, spirit and soul. And to love your neighbor as yourself. This is what being a servant is all about. To humble themselves before God and men that He may lift you up in due season.

True words and wisdom to all who hear.

God bless,
Ryan

Good post Jenn,
I am blessed that you seek true wisdom. Here is a little more L>L&P>P.

Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Matthew 10:37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.

Matthew 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38This is the first and great commandment. 39And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Luke 15:21 And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.

Luke 18:13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. 14I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Psalm 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

1 Chronicles 28:9 And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.

Ecclesiastes 9:10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

James 2:20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

Matthew 25:34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 36Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

"Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me".

Can it be described any better?

What sheer joy I feel in reading what you young people have to share from what the Lord has given you. This is pure truth young lady, and you have understood it as The Spirit of The Most High God has intended you to. God bless you, and keep you and may He never stop teaching you and may you never stop learning. Our trials are a blessing from God to prove us and to try us, and to make us humble and fit for the Kingdom of God.
